What to Do With Directory Listings When a Location Changes

A business move affects more than the address on the official website. Old directory profiles can continue appearing in searches, saved bookmarks, and local category pages long after the premises have changed.

Step 1: Separate a Relocation From a Closure

If the business moves but continues operating, the existing listing may need an address update rather than removal. A permanent closure is different. The profile should no longer imply that customers can visit, call, or book at that location.

Before editing anything, record the old address and identify the directories where it appears. This makes it easier to find lingering references after the move is complete.

Step 2: Closure status should match reality

A location that has moved is different from a business that has permanently closed. When a branch relocates, preserve continuity where the platform supports an address change. When the operation has ended, mark it appropriately instead of replacing the old address with an unrelated branch. Clear status handling prevents customers from travelling to a place that no longer serves them.

Step 3: Make the New Location Easy to Confirm

Update the address, map position, local phone number, and destination URL where required. If the business has a location page, that page should also reflect the change clearly.

For a closed branch, avoid simply abandoning the listing. Where possible, mark it appropriately or follow the directory's closure process so people are not sent to an empty or unrelated site.

A location change is complete when the old information stops competing with the new one.
